はじめに

When I talk about coffee, people sometimes ask, “Why is it called feather village coffee?” It has nothing to do with Hamura City, as it turns out — the name is drawn from “feather village,” an early Wool Strings song. コーヒーの話をしていると、たまに「どうしてfeather village coffeeという名前なんですか？」とご質問をいただくことがあります。実は羽村市とはなにも関係がなくて、言ってしまえばWool Stringsの"feather village"という初期の楽曲の曲名から引いている、ということになります。

It's less about any deep feeling poured into the song, and more about the sound of the title itself — the impression it evokes, and the world it conjures. Clear air, a quiet sense of being wrapped in something larger, a feeling that makes you want to surrender to nature. That whole image simply felt right when I was starting a coffee label. 楽曲にこめた熱い想いがある、というよりは、その曲名そのものの語感、そこから喚起される印象、そして世界観——空気が澄んでいて、大きななにかに包まれているような、自然に身を委ねたくなるような感覚——そのイメージ全体が、コーヒーレーベルを始めるにあたって、しっくりきたという感触がありました。

Now that some time has passed since I started, that feeling has turned into conviction. Building the various parts of Sea Song Label around this imaginary village called feather village has turned out to be far more enjoyable than I expected. Let me introduce a few of those parts here. そして、始めてしばらく経ったいま、その感触は確信に変わりました。feather villageという架空の村を中心として、Sea Song Labelの様々な構成要素をその周辺に作り上げることが、思いのほか、とても楽しかったのです。その「構成要素」を少しだけご紹介します。

In the autumn of 2025, I started a small publishing house called Waterwheel Press. The image is of a river running through the village, with a waterwheel quietly turning, generating power. 2025年の秋には、Waterwheel Pressという名前の小さな出版社をつくりました。村の中に川が流れていて、そこで静かに動力を生み出す水車が回っている、そんなイメージです。

As an aside, I love a song called “Onde Eu Nasci Passa Um Rio” (“A river runs through where I was born”), from Caetano Veloso & Gal Costa's quiet, beautiful album Domingo. I may be unconsciously drawing on that song's world somewhere in this. For now, Waterwheel Press only puts out a free paper of the same name, but I'd like to make something like a zine someday. 余談ですが、僕はCaetano Veloso & Gal Costaの"Domingo"という静かでとても美しいアルバムに収録されている、"Onde Eu Nasci Passa Um Rio"（僕の生まれたところには川が流れている）という曲がものすごく好きです。その曲の世界観を、どこかで意識しているのかもしれません。Waterwheel Pressはいまは同名のフリーペーパーを発行しているだけですが、いつかジンのようなものもつくってみたいと思っています。

There are other projects too, though none as fully formed as Waterwheel Press yet. I can't go into detail here, but let me at least name a few: OS EAU, Sundial, Terrarium… all of them exist not too far from the village of feather village. その他にも、Waterwheel Pressほどきちんとした形にはなっていないものの、様々なプロジェクトがあります。詳細は書ききれませんが、名前だけ少し。OS EAU、Sundial、Terrarium……どれも、feather villageという村からそう遠くない場所にあります。

I've always known I love naming things. My instinct is to give a name to everything. And once something has a name, even a purely imaginary idea starts to feel vividly alive — at least to me. These small ideas, these passing thoughts, always end up encouraging me, keeping me looking forward. 僕は生来、なにかに名前をつけるのが好きな自覚があります。なにごとにも「名前をつけてやる」という感じです。そして名前をもったなにかは、架空のアイデアであっても、生き生きとした存在感を持ち始めるのです。少なくとも、僕の中では。そんな小さなアイデアが、思いつきが、いつも僕を励ましてくれたり、前向きな気持ちにさせてくれたりします。

I feel like all of these attempts are a kind of miniature garden. Terrarium, one of the project names I just mentioned, is literally that. There's a therapeutic practice that uses miniature gardens this way, and I feel something similar — turning my inner world into something tangible through each project of Sea Song Label, feather village coffee included. Each one feels quietly connected to the others, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. このような試みのすべてに、僕は箱庭のような感覚を持っています。さっきも、Terrarium（箱庭）という、そのままのプロジェクト名が出てきました。箱庭療法という言葉もありますが、自分の内的な世界を、feather village coffeeをはじめとするSea Song Labelの各プロジェクトによって形のあるものに変えていく感覚、それぞれがどこかで通じ合っている感覚があって、やっていてとても楽しいのです。

At the very least, I'm not doing this out of a sense of obligation, the way work can feel. It's very close to the feeling of making a new Wool Strings album — arranging the songs, giving them titles, imagining the whole world they add up to. There are time constraints, of course, but it's the kind of work I could keep doing forever. 少なくとも、仕事のような義務感からやっているのではありません。Wool Stringsの新しいアルバムを作るときに、曲を並べて、タイトルをつけて、その総合的な世界観を夢想する——その時の感覚にとても近いです。時間的な制約はあるものの、いつまでもできてしまうような作業なんです。

All kinds of things happen day to day. Each project will sometimes slow down, or come to a stop for a while. Since these are things that move alongside everyday life, I've come to accept that as simply how it goes. That said, some of this work involves other people too, so I try not to cause anyone trouble, while still holding on to my own pace. That's roughly how I approach it all. 日々、様々なことが起きます。時に各プロジェクトはゆっくりになったり、立ち止まったりすると思います。暮らしの中で動いているものなので、仕方ないなと思うことも多いです。とはいえ、相手のあるお仕事の側面も当然あるので、人にご迷惑はかけないように、でも自分のペースを大切に。そんな感じで僕は取り組んでいます。
